On Dec 17th Bruce Reinhardt organized a volunteer crew (Bill Wilson, Don Heyfron, Gordon Mangel, Richard Eacobacci and Larry Clark) to build and erect nest boxes for barn owls. The crew was able to build and install sixteen (16) boxes in trees throughout the Park. The purpose of this project is to encourage barn owls to nest in the park and help control the gopher population. We have written material that indicates a single gopher will occupy 200 to 2000 square feet of area which means the Park has a significant population of gophers and other rodents. The park and surrounding areas is well over 100 acres which means the gopher count is a minimum of 2000 gophers. A single barn owl could consume 500 gophers in a year. Let’s hope we get some barn owls to take up residence in the park.
