GCSSA NEWSLETTER MAY 2008 P.O. BOX 328, PENN VALLEY, CA www.gcssasoftball.org
Update to GCSSA players after the first month of the season, with the work or project ongoing, and volunteer(s) involved. Please accept my apology for anyone I have missed, with your appreciated help.
1. Bob Swarthout, coordinator for field maintenance with team leaders and their helpers for various upkeep duties throughout the season. 2. Grooming infields: Team Leader (TL) Swarthout, (Tetzlaff, Girdner, Kaufman, Reinhardt), before first game on game days. 3. Mowing: (TL) Eacobacci, (Wilson, Eacobacci, Heyfron). Monday and Thursday mornings with grass being cut to 1 ½ inches. 4. Foul lines and 160 arc circle: (TL) Eacobacci, (Wilson, Swarthout, Burnett, Liebke). 5. Gopher work: (TL) Eacobacci, (Eacobacci, Reinhardt). Poison pellets in the outfields and traps outside the foul lines. 6. Grandstand seats: (TL) Jim Kerns and helpers installed the blue bucket seats in April for the comfort of all while viewing games. 7. Common area around seating area: Outside contractor completed drain pipe and grading. Gravel donated by Jack Madison was spread around area near shed and field 2 grandstand. 8. Western Gateway Park maintenance and equipment area: (TL) Swarthout, (Swarthout, Swanson, and helpers). The park maintenance garage is being completely cleaned up and re-organized. The park also has volunteers from the area cleaning up the garage and outside of all scrap and junk accumulated over the years. 9. Fence line grass and weeds: (TL) Eacobacci, (Kasparian, volunteers). 10. Chalking the infields: Home team, prior to first game by team members. 11. Rock removal on infields: Visiting team, prior to first game to pick up rocks and dispose over the fence, so when the field is dragged the next time, the rocks will not be dragged back out on the infields, if they were just thrown to foul territory area. 12. General cleanup: (TL) Swarthout, (players). Park volunteers empty the trash cans only, and do not do any trash or water bottle pickup of our common area. Ongoing and once a month, a general cleanup is needed to keep our areas nice and tidy. 13. Watering of the outfields: Richard Eacobacci has re-programmed the outfield watering duration for a deeper soaking, but not every day as the park was doing for a short watering period. Cleaning of the sprinkler heads is being done by Eacobacci and Girdner to get better water coverage. 14. Chain link fence repair: (TL) Swarthout. Sections of fence are curled up at ground level posing a safety concern. The Board discussed this and hope we can fix this problem by something equivalent to a large tent peg driven into the ground and pulling the fence curl down to ground level. 15. Heavy Maintenance on outfields. (TL) Swarthout. After the season games are completed, the outfield will be dethatched to remove an accumulation of grass build-up. This could be labor intensive and will require a number of volunteers. We will be using Western Gateway Park equipment as well as rented and loaned equipment to make the job as easy as possible. The process will develop a significant amount of material which must be removed from the fields. After the dethatching we hope to add top dressing material to fill the major depressions. Again a combination of labor and equipment will be used to complete this task. After the top dressing is added and smoothed out the area will be reseeded and watered to get the new grass established. Please let Bob Swarthout or any Board member know if you can volunteer. 16. The end of season will be modified to reschedule the rain-out days and to avoid a double header for team #4. A double elimination tournament is planned for the end of season and is expected to be completed by September (date not yet determined). A firm plan will be posted soon.
